Government and economists defend Germany’s roaring export machine

Posted by seumasach on March 16, 2010

It’s notable that the whole issue surrounding growth and productivity has been reduced to that of wage levels. Yet the real question is investment and training for the growth of the real economy.  In Germany we find there is long term relationships between banks and medium sized family companies: the orientation of credit towards real production is crucial.

Deutsche Welle

16th March, 2010

It’s not the first time that Germany and France have clashed over economic policy, nor will it be the last. But this time, Germany doesn’t appear willing to budge on what it has gained with considerable pain: a globally competitive export industry.

Gordon Brown intervenes to delay EU hedge funds rules

Posted by seumasach on March 16, 2010

US fund managers being unfairly discriminated against sounds like a classic New Labour cause, something to get passionate about, a question of shared values. And indeed it is, but that isn’t good enough for the opposition who complain that the government isn’t sufficiently committed to the financier cause. This, in a nutshell, is Britain.

Guardian

16th March, 2010

Gordon Brown delayed EU proposals for tighter rules covering hedge funds and private equity groups after he intervened to block a discussion by finance ministers meeting in Spain.

E.U. Parliament Calls For Implementing The Goldstone Report

Posted by seumasach on March 16, 2010

Meanwhile, according to some sources Israel’s atomic arsenal is being aimed at European capitals. This is logical: Israel recognises that Europe will not always continue to act as a vassal of the US and is likely, at some point. to throw in its weight behind the Palestinians.

Voltairenet

11th March, 2010

The European Parliament adopted during its Wednesday session a decision calling for implementing the recommendations of the Goldstone report on Gaza war, in preparation to present the resolution to the 13th session of the United Nations’ Human Rights Council which will be held in Geneva by the end of March [1].

Diego Garcia bunker-busters meant to threaten Iran

Posted by seumasach on March 16, 2010

In its dotage the empire’s diplomacy is reduced to making threats, a sign of growing weakness. Unfortunately, however, it cannot be assumed that they are idle threats: as long as the Wall Street/City/MIC mob are in control we are not safe from the madness of a greater war. On the positive side the wider world is fat awakening to the threat: the urgent need now is for a genuine opposition to crystallise in the US/UK. That may be emerging in the US around figures such as Cynthia McKinney, Ron Paul and Cindy Sheehan. Can we in the UK take our cue from them? More broadly, can we grasp the potential within the emerging multipolar world, recognising both our own imperialism and the fact that opposition to it necessarily takes the form of the re-emergence of countries such as Russia, Brazil and India as genuinely independent, sovereign nations.

PressTV

16th March, 2010

The Sunday Herald has reported that hundreds of powerful US “bunker-buster” bombs are being shipped from California to the British island of Diego Garcia.

Lula refuses to visit grave of founder of Zionism

Posted by seumasach on March 16, 2010

In a speech to the Israeli parliament on Monday, Lula said efforts should be made to turn the Middle East into a nuclear weapons-free zone.

This is nothing morethan a reaffirmation of UN resolutions, but, nonetheless, it is immensely encouraging to hear it openly stated and in such a context.

PressTV

16th March, 2010

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has refused to visit the grave of Theodor Herzl, the founder of modern Zionism.

Russia, India in renewed embrace

Posted by seumasach on March 15, 2010

On a geopolitical level, enormously significant developments are coming thick and fast. The US is now reminiscent of the Soviet Union in its decline: it is unable to consolidate its influence in places where it appears to have established a foothold. Russian diplomacy is becoming more and more influential and it interesting to see them trying to resolve or attenuate conflicts such as that between India and Pakistan.

Ravi Velloor

Straits Times

14th March, 2010
A raft of agreements between Russia and India signal Moscow’s return to centre stage in New Delhi’s strategic calculations, where awareness of the limits of its special relationship with the United States is rapidly building.

Greek Lessons for Europe

Posted by seumasach on March 14, 2010

Of course, the projected EMF, or economic government, cannot just be an enforcer of fiscal probity: it needs to direct funds towards the reconstruction of the real economy and away from property bubbles, for example. If it’s just a question of degrading economies and opening them up to the extraction of quick frofits, the IMF is the man for the job. Unless Europe merely seeks the privilege of destroying itself. In any event, it’s striking how fast things are moving and it’s clear that any EMF is anathema to the City of London and Wall Street

Joschka Fisher

New Europe

14th March, 2010

“It’s when the tide goes out that you find out who has been swimming naked,” the legendary investor Warren Buffet aptly remarked when the global economic crisis hit. And, as we have found out in the meantime, this is as true for countries as it is for companies. Following Ireland, Greece is now the second Eurozone member to have gotten into massive payment difficulties due to the crisis, almost to the point of national bankruptcy. Ireland was able to resolve its problems by itself, through a restructuring policy that was painful yet unflinching. It could do so because its economy, apart from its excessive debt burden following the collapse of an asset bubble, was basically sound.

Iceland, the Mouse that Roared

Posted by seumasach on March 14, 2010

This article elegantly captures the idea of real wealth trumping the fictitious derivative value created by the banks. It’s the banks who have to be put through bankruptcy not the real economy. But who would administrate such a procedure? The sovereign power, the state as an expression of popular sovereignty , alone can accomplish this. The state is also  a priority creditor in this process having channeled immense wealth, publicly owned wealth, into the hands of the banks- wealth that has to be recovered. Only the state can create the kind of public credit system we need. It is not for nothing that the financiers see sovereignty as anathema and seek to reduce the state to a private institution, a mere tool of oligarchy. The crisis, then , takes the form of the affirmation of sovereignty versus the negation of sovereignty. Unfortunately, in the anglo-saxon world , at least, the anathema against sovereignty is shared by the oligarchy and its critics: both oppose “intrusive government”. But we need government to “intrude” into the affairs of the banksters on our behalf.

I thought I heard something the other night. It was a distant sound, a low rumbling, a roar from some far off beast that had finally pronounced its presence. It woke me for a second, but it was so distant I felt no threat and simply rolled over and went back to sleep. The next morning I learned that Iceland was taking a stand. It was refusing to pay its British and Dutch debts. It is claiming the debts are a result of fraud, and it’s right. They have made the offer to pay some years from now, if they can afford it at that time, and only as a percentage of their GDP. This offer has been, of course, declined by Iceland’s creditor banks as they demand payment in the form of real assets.
