In These New Times

“In these new times, in spite of the dangers, the most brutal force, the most fearful night, we are engaged in the fight to survive.” No Novo Tempo-Ivan Lins, Vitor Martins

No Novo Tempo

No Novo Tempo(In These New Times) – Ivan Lins e Vitor Martins

No novo tempo, apesar dos castigos

Estamos crescidos, estamos atentos, estamos mais vivos

Pra nos socorrer, pra nos socorrer, pra nos socorrer

(In these new times, in spite of the penalties,

we are growing, we are more alert, we are more alive

to defend ourselves, to survive.)

Pra sobreviver, pra sobreviver, pra sobreviver

(In these new times, in spite of the danger,

the most brutal force, the most fearful night,

we are engaged in the fight

to survive)

(So that our hopes are more than just revenge,

let’s follow a path left to us from the past)

(In these new times, in spite of the penalties,

of all fatigue, of all injustice, we are fighting

to help ourselves.)

Pra sobreviver, pra sobreviver, pra sobreviver

(In these new times, in spite of the dangers,

of all its crimes, of all its deceptions,

we are marked out to survive.)

(In these new times, in spite of the penalties,

we play our part, we take to the streets, casting off our chains,

to help ourselves.

In these new times, in spite of the dangers,

we are out singing in the square, being a nuissance,

to survive)

    Dear ‘In These New Times’,

As far as I know your site is the only one dealing with social and political themes to have a piece of original music and poetry as its inspiration. And such a passionate and motivational song it is too! The rhythms and chords have that optimism and spice so characteristic of the new, independent and forward-looking southern American continent. That reminds me of the similarly passionate singing of Carlos Arredondo who sung at ‘Workers’ May Day celebration in Edinburgh a couple of years ago. Recently I discovered his great performance of “Pueblo Unido” – from the Allende years of his native Chile – on http://www.raretunes.org. He has not yet recorded it on CD.

Here it is: another song that the people of South America have given us in an unforgetable heritage to humanity:

  3. Dear friends,

Just to thank my good friend the composer Eddy MCGuire who put forward my name in your site and also, to recognise that your website is very good and valid.

I am sending to you my own website :www.carlosarredondo.com which is a site dealing with Chilean refugees in Scotland and Chile during the dictatorship of Pinochet. There are a lot of music, poetry, stories, Chilean history and my own experiences in Chile as in Scotland.

    Many thanks!! and muchas gracias!!

    Carlos Arredondo
