Putin calls for ceasefire in Gaza Strip

Russian President Vladimir Putin stressed the need to stop the armed confrontation in the Gaza Strip, in a telephone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the Kremlin press service reported. “A detailed discussion took place on the sharp escalation of the situation in the Gaza Strip and the south of Israel. The Russian side stressed the need for a speedy end to the armed confrontation, which has led to numerous casualties among the civilian population,” the Kremlin’s statement reads, noting that the conversation, which also touched on further bilateral contacts between the two countries, was initiated by the Israeli side.

Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen) launched his “diplomatic intifada” against Israel and exit from the Kerry peace initiative Thursday, Jan. 23, from Moscow. His meetings with President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev marked his breakaway from the US-led peace process with Israel, four months before it was due to expire, and signaled his bid for Russian backing for a Palestinian state.

Companies and governments in Holland, the UK, and Romania are downgrading ties with Israeli companies to protest Israel’s policies in areas it acquired in 1967. Palestinians say all of these areas must be part of a future Palestinian state; Israel says it has not annexed these areas and would make “significant concessions” in exchange for real peace with the Palestinians.

Palestinians: Peace talks to go on, despite resignations

Perhaps the UK government’s warning to investors about investment’s in illegally held West Bank territory constitute just such pressure. Now is a good moment for the many people involved in campaigning for Palestinian rights to raise their profile. Unfortunately, however, it is more likely that they will adopt an impossibilist position
