Whither the Arab Spring?

Whilst Western analysts, in general, continue to a present a distorted view of the Arab Revolution, it is important to look to the analysis coming out of the Arab world itself to gain insight into what is happening. This overview by one of Egypt’s leading political thinkers is, in this respect, indispensable.

The year 2011 began with a series of shattering, wrathful explosions from the Arab peoples. Is this springtime the inception of a second ‘awakening of the Arab world?’ Or will these revolts bog down and finally prove abortive – as was the case with the first episode of that awakening, which was evoked in my book L’Eveil du Sud (Paris: Le temps des cerises, 2008). If the first hypothesis is confirmed, the forward movement of the Arab world will necessarily become part of the movement to go beyond imperialist capitalism on the world scale. Failure would keep the Arab world in its current status as a submissive periphery, prohibiting its elevation to the rank of an active participant in shaping the world.

Egyptians to hold Friday mass rally

Egyptian protesters have planned another million-man march next Friday, naming the rally as the “Day to Purge the Remnants of Mubarak Regime from Egypt.”

Former vice-chairman of Egypt’s Court of Cassation, Mahmoud El Khodeiry on Tuesday called on all Egyptians, including Muslims and Christians, to take part in the upcoming protest on Friday in Cairo’s Libration Square, Egyptian newspaper Al-Youm Al-Sabe reported.

Egypt warns Israel: Don’t interfere with opening of Gaza border crossing

Egyptian youth call for million-man marches to support Palestinians

A call for “million-man” marches in support of the Palestinians has been made by Egypt’s Coalition of the Youth of the Revolution. The first march, to be held in Alexandria on 13 May, will also demand the opening of the Egypt-Gaza border for food, medical and humanitarian aid; marchers will head for the Israeli Consulate in the city.

Egyptians want to end deal with Israel

The results of the poll, which was conducted by the United States-based Pew Research Center, came out on Monday, pointing to a 54% lean towards the scrapping of the Israel-Egypt Peace Treaty, the Associated Press reported. The poll surveyed 1,000 Egyptians countrywide between March 24 and April 7.
