Plan would place burden for Euro rescue on creditors

Posted by seumasach on January 25, 2011

Spiegel

24th January, 2011

Despite public denials, euro zone governments are currently working on a proposal to relieve Greek bond debt. The proposal has a number of advantages for all countries involved, but it also entails risks that may be insurmountable. Some believe regulatory pressure will be required to force banks to take voluntary losses on their loans to Athens.

Sterling dives as UK economy posts shock Q4 contraction

Posted by seumasach on January 25, 2011

All this has to be seen in the light of grossly understated inflation figures. Anyone can see the high street trading has been dying for some time. We are a nation of consumers or we are nothing: we’re certainly not a nation of producers. The anti-euro campaign seems to be running out of steam and so there is nothing left to protect the pound. The property market is dead. We have a record trade deficit and unrivalled mountains of debt. A sharp reality check is on the way and we face it virtually friendless- the US won’t be in any kind of shape to help out. What looms ahead is frightening, almost unimaginably so.

Investment Week

25th January, 2011

UK GDP contracted by 0.5% in the last three months of 2010, shocking economists who had predicted growth of between 0.2% and 0.6% and sending sterling into freefall.

The most predictable financial calamity in history

Greg Hunter

USA Watchdog

24th January, 2011

In November 2010, the Federal Reserve announced a second round of economic stimulus commonly referred to as Quantitative Easing (QE2).  The reason, according to the Fed, was“progress toward its objectives has been disappointingly slow.”   So, to try and turn the economy around, the Fed said, “. . . the Committee intends to purchase a further $600 billion of longer-term Treasury securities by the end of the second quarter (June) of 2011, a pace of about $75 billion per month.” (Click here to read the complete announcement from the Fed.) QE means the Fed basically creates money out of thin air to buy debt.  The current money printing orgy is financing more than half of U.S. government right now.  The first round of QE bought toxic mortgage debt and bailed out the bankers.

US wants to clip Karzai’s wings

Posted by seumasach on January 25, 2011

“Karzai is banking on a pan-Afghan alliance to support his audacious plan to reconcile the Taliban, and the US is using the ethnic card to unravel Karzai’s alliance system.”

“Washington finds Karzai increasingly acting as an Afghan nationalist rather than as a US surrogate.”

“Meanwhile, Karzai is making sustained efforts to develop ties with Iran and Russia, including military cooperation, so as to reduce his dependence on the US by the 2014 timeline. Moscow has proposed a key role for Kabul in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.”

“Washington is negotiating a new Status of Forces Agreement with Kabul but Karzai is resisting the US plan to keep permanent military bases.”

Asia Times

25th January, 2011

The United States’ proxy war against Afghan President Hamid Karzai has taken a vicious turn, undermining the tenuous political equations in the country. Washington is displeased with Karzai’s moves to accelerate reconciliation with the Taliban, while his pitch for a regional initiative and his agenda of a multi-vector foreign policy challenge US regional strategies.

Thierry Meyssan

Alors que les médias occidentaux célèbrent la « Jasmine Revolution », Thierry Meyssan dévoile le plan US pour tenter de stopper la colère du peuple tunisien et conserver cette discrète base arrière de la CIA et de l’OTAN. Confucius takes a stand

BEIJING – In a ritual equal only to that of the church, last week China placed a statue of Confucius in its political heart, Tiananmen Square, before Mao Zedong’s portrait and near the modern obelisk to the People’s Heroes, two symbols that materially defined China’s national identity for 60 years.
